From the 19th to the 21st Century

Privatisation and the status of museums in civil society

03.06.-04.06.2013

Workshop

Registration is required!

The privatisation of the Universal Museum Joanneum in 2003 was probably the museum’s biggest organisational change in its 200-year history. We would like to take the occasion of the Joanneum’s 10-year anniversary as a company to evaluate all the privatisations that have taken place in many Austrian museums since the 1990s and that were and still are a major issue for many museums within and beyond the German-speaking world: What explanations and reasons were given for granting museums their autonomy? What expectations of the owners and operators have (not) been fulfilled? What types of legal status are available for privatisations? What are the pros and cons of these different types of legal status? How have the organisational structures developed since privatisation, and what about the profiles and responsibilities of museum executives? We shall take stock of the current situation and offer an outlook for the future.
