The Kunsthaus continues its series in which contemporary artists and designers play a part in designing our furnishings, engaging at various levels with the functions, routines and needs of the institution. Our designs and arrangements ensure that, unconventionally, visitors encounter art and design from the moment they enter the Kunsthaus at ground-floor level.

SUPERFLEX started the Free Shop project in Bremen in 2003. It can in principle be carried out in any shop (from a greengrocer’s through to a pharmacy or a snack bar). When they go to the cash desk, customers are given a receipt totalling 0, i.e. they don’t have to pay for their purchases.

Barrier tapes are used to section areas off from one another and to control access. Hannes Priesch and Herta Kramer-Priesch were commissioned to explore the topic of barriers, and in particular accessibility and inaccessibility both in the foyer and throughout the building.

Space05 is host to a glittering light object: EPHEMERE. This opulent chandelier takes as its theme the ambiguous properties between forms of functionality, as an ornamental object, as a light sculpture and also – embracing a thoroughly critical perspective on consumerism – acts as a site-specific intervention in “free” art space.

Birke Gorm sees the Kunsthaus as an organic body, whose ‘lifelines’ lie in the visitors’ hallway. She intervenes in this place of movement. The handrail is thus suddenly interrupted and replaced by the bronze cast of a branch that fits in seamlessly with the standardised railings.
