Erzherzog Johann

30.04.-22.11.2009 09:00-17:00

Venue: Landwirtschaftsmuseum

Schloss Stainz Hunting Museum's contribution to this exhibition is a wide-ranging portrait of this exceptional 19th-century visionary. It shows on several levels how the effects of his achievements are still evident today.

Major modern institutions were set up at his initiative. For example, he laid the foundations for the Grazer Wechselseitige Versicherung insurance company, the Steiermärkische Sparkasse savings bank and (jointly with his wife) the Anna Children's Hospital. The Styrian education system as it is today would likewise be inconceivable without the Joanneum College and Technical University, Montan University and the Styrian State Library.

Archduke Johann also promoted new technology and techniques in agriculture, therewith making important contributions to the improvement of farming and livestock breeding as well as the development of machinery and appliances. Numerous exhibits once belonging to or associated with our founder form the basis of a colourful and informative display.
