Photography

The invention of photography in the 19th century was a historic revolution in media: phenomena of the outside world could be recorded for the first time via optical and chemical procedures. Thanks to further technological developments, photography grew to be a mass medium within just a few decades. A photograph preserves a moment already past. This is also true of the approx. 2 million photographs that currently reside in our museum’s stores. The Schaudepot shows you a representative collection based on criteria like type of equipment, age, artist, region of origin and themes.
