The coming year marks the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. The Universalmuseum Joanneum will mount the exhibition Styria and the ‘Great War’ in the Museum im Palais, and in so doing has opted – in cooperation with the University of Graz – for this regional focus.
For the first time the exhibition will focus on a region not directly hit by combat, yet greatly affected by the consequences. Based on numerous photos, picture postcards, letters from the front, film material etc., the exhibition shows the far-reaching changes wrought by the First World War on ordinary people. These often personal documents are supported by many exhibits shown here for the first time, which come from Styrian collections and the Universalmuseum Joanneum’s object collections.
