Forms of Knowledge in Media Art

  • 26.04.-31.08.2010

As of May 22nd 2010, after six years at the Südtirolerplatz, the Medienkunstlabor transitioned from being a physical entity to an existence as concept for the support of media art in all its forms. Via guest projects and a call for ideas, the Medienkunstlabor studies the matter from various perspectives and in different situations. Existing connections to research institutions will continue to be maintained and new ones tapped for future art projects. This approach opens new possibilities when it comes to implementing new conceptual and spacial formats. The support of media art and its presentation will be a strong focus in future exhibitions.

As part of the 200-year anniversary of the Universalmuseum Joanneum, the 2011 program of the Kunsthaus Graz focuses on the role of the museum as both accumulator and generator of knowledge. The museum as a location of insight and social construction of realities, subjects itself to important questions such as the definition of knowledge content, and a critical look at various forms of knowledge representation.

Within this context, the Medienkunstlabor is looking for projects to be realized at the Kunsthaus Graz, which focus on the topic of visualizing and storing knowledge, and also take a critical look at the creation and transfer of knowledge. These projects can be realized on a virtual as well as on a physical level, relate to specific locations in the Kunsthaus Graz or expand beyond. Of importance is the in-depth examination of contemporary questions dealing with structured, publicly accessible knowledge in the context of an independent art project. By October 2010, the projects will be chosen by the team of curators at the Kunsthaus Graz in co-operation with Richard Kriesche and Sandro Droschl. The winning projects will be implemented over the year 2011 in the Kunsthaus Graz and throughout the entire Universalmuseum Joanneum. A separate budget will be allocated for the realization and presentation of each chosen project.
