In the beginning there was the fall of man, bringing about shame. This is at least the belief of many religions. In the "society of shame" the offence is not to feel ashamed although you ought to. You ought to feel ashamed if you don't act according to social expectations and norms. Becoming aware of your misdemeanour you feel ashamed and you suffer from it, because in the end it is connected with a vague feeling of the need for compensation.
According to Freud, shame is a reaction to anarchistic expressions of infantile sexuality – especially exhibitionistic or voyeuristic drives.

The main objective of this artistic project of the Serbian artist couple MP_art, working in 2008 as artists-in-residence at the Neue Galerie, is to investigate the phenomenon of "shame" in different countries, cultures, religions and social classes. The most important partners in their project are local artists who are invited by MP_art to make a contribution to the subject of "shame". Additionally, people are interviewed and presented in video clips. As part of the project and as their own contribution MP_art will show the performance "MP_per_15 CONFESSION – PILLORY".
