For many, good/increasing numbers of visitors is a sign of successful museum work. Therefore, it is all the more surprising that there is often a lack of knowledge in museums about who their visitors are, what needs they have and why they find certain offers appealing or less appealing. Professional audience research can improve this situation, although the usefulness of it depends on a number of factors and its full effectiveness only becomes apparent when its results are integrated into the strategic planning of those responsible for museums.

Under the title of The Much Sought-after Guest, best practice models of audience research and various methods of data collection and analysis will be presented. In addition, we would like to discuss ideas and possibilities of how audience research can be an instrument for the quality assurance of visitor-oriented museum work for directors and those responsible for museums.
