The term open air museum is normally associated with a collection of historical buildings and objects to show past architectural styles and ways of life. The enormous preservation costs, problematic sponsorship models and different competitive situation have led to a discussion of the possibilities for a reorientation of the institution in terms of content and business strategy, although how much progress this discussion is making depends on the location. By looking at a few examples, we would like to trace the museal, socio-historical and socio-political significance open air museums have today and could have in the future. We will examine the viability of approaches and strategies of other cultural and recreational institutions for further developing this type of museum and will look for models to solve the financial, structural and constructional challenges.
