No network?
Digital upheaval in museum storerooms
- 16.11.2012
Conference
in cooperation with the Centre for Cultural Studies at the University of Graz, and the Department of Media Studies of the Institut für Musikwissenschaft und Medienwissenschaft at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (D)
Registration required!
As part of an international conference, we will turn our attention to the changes that museum storerooms and archival apparatuses are undergoing in response to the introduction of networks. The steady shift of cultural techniques to the digital world also requires changes to the idea of institutional archives and thus the structure and use of analog and digital representations of collections. We will examine the potential repercussions of changing concepts of museum and cultural objects (incl. technical media) as well as future curatorial and scholarly fields of activity. Must the terms “original” and “museum” be redefined in the light of digital archives and network-based storerooms? And what problems of (re)presentation continue to exist in relation to traditional forms of storage and classification and what new ones will emerge?
