What roles do museums play in a country, whose founding and history are inextricably linked with the biggest genocide and flight and immigration, whose birth was accompanied by political and military conflicts, and whose current everyday life is still characterised by violence and terror? In hardly any other country is the “musealisation” of one’s own national, social and cultural history such a big and responsible challenge as in Israel. In hardly any other country is the visualisation of the (de)construction of identity so controlled by educational institutions as it is there. And in hardly any other country is there such a struggle over contradictory views of history and so much space given to diametrically opposed narratives like in the museums in Israel. But how can national institutions actually contribute to solving the internal and external, political, social and religious problems? Can the responsible directors, curators and mediators really take constructive and multilateral action? And what chances of success does this multilateralism have? We will explore these questions on a five-day tour of Israeli museums, during visits to exhibitions and on sightseeing walks of the city, in conversations with creative artists, scholars and those responsible for museums as well as by examining relevant texts on museology and the theory of history.
