The cultural historical collection of the Joanneum Universal Museum opens its doors at the Museum im Palais in Graz on 11th May 2011, for the first time exhibiting a selection of its treasures on 2,400m2 of floor space.
The highlights of the collection will be on show, along with the original Baroque rooms of the Palais and their furnishings. They come mainly from high aristocratic sources, and have a close connection with Styria and Graz. They include the Styrian ducal coronet, the only surviving Gothic state coach in the world (once belonging to the Emperor Frederick III) and a sundial of Frederick III’s court astronomer Georg Peuerbach, inventor of the mobile sundial.
It is planned to put on a special exhibition every year. In 2011, Peuerbach’s sundial (dated 1455) will form the centrepiece of an exhibition on time and various aspects of it.
Exhibits in the museum are arranged according to categories such as furnishings, glassware, carpets, caskets, clocks, musical instruments, guild symbols, tomb crosses, interiors and fashion.
