Sonja Harter presents Candy
A film evening in the my own private cinema series
- 22.09.2009, 07:00 PM
Writer Sonja Harter presents Candy (with Heath Ledger), a film based on Australian writer Luke Davies’s novel of the same name. A sensitive poet falls in love with two kinds of Candy – a young art student of that name, and heroin. Attracted by the bohemian lifestyle, Candy throws herself into Dan’s arms, and heroin addiction as well. A great love affair is on its way downhill.
The film tracks the couple’s relationship in three phases, called Heaven, Earth and Hell. Their mood fluctuates between ecstasy, oblivion, self-destruction and despair. The incidents that go with addiction are recorded in the smallest detail, from the use of needles to the uncertainties of hunting for dope. The parents of the junkies accept the circumstances in silence, while the two youngsters deny they have problems and create a world of their own.
Drama, Australia, 2006, director Neil Armfield, approx. 105 mins, English with German subtitles.

... is an unusual film series. The Kunsthaus Graz regularly invites someone with passion and great enthusiasm for film as a medium to present a personal favourite film. For the public, this is a chance to see a film through the eyes of someone for whom the film is something special. On the way, unexpected light is thrown on genres, subject matter, individual interests and perspectives. In co-operation with KIZ RoyalKino.
