Two hypnotic masterpieces of the visionary Hungarian director Béla Tarr, selected by Tatiana Trouvé:

While Damnation (1987, 116 min, Engl. subtitles) is a mesmerizing drama of inner psychological and metaphysical charge, his Werckmeister Harmonies (2000, 145 min, Engl. subtitles), starring Hanna Schygulla, is a haunting study of anarchy and a portrait of a human condition on the threshold of a new, necessary beginning. 

 

Béla Tarr combines the political and the subjective in his allegorical cinematic visions, uncannily suspended in time and space, on the edge of the real and imaginary. These are contemporary fairy-tales of a strongly prophetic nature.
