Lecture
Helen Drutt is world renowned for her significant contributions and continual commitment to the advancement and awareness of the Modern and Contemporary Craft Movement. Drutt's earliest achievements in the field include the establishment of one of the first galleries in the United States committed to modern and contemporary crafts, Helen Drutt: Philadelphia. Over the past decades, Drutt has also acquired a significant collection of jewelry in order to preserve an important segment of this art form's history. The collection is now a permanent part of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
A survey of modern and contemporary ceramics and metals, by internationally recognized artists will be explored through the documentations of works, artists’ studios, public exhibitions and private collections. Helen Drutt will discuss the sweeping changes in which the crafts celebrated freedom and expansion of expression in a world where traditional art categories are no longer evident. In Philadelphia, activities central to the history of the field were originated and supported by Helen Drutt: Philadelphia making possible a discourse between America, Europe and Asia.
