The Argentiferous Lead-zinc Mineralizations of Arzberg (Eastern Styria)
by Leopold Weber
Abstract: The silverbearing lead-zinc mineralizations of the “Graz Paleozoic” are of submarine-sedimentary origin as a result of rifting between Upper Silurian–Lower Devonian times. The stratiform mineralizations are linked to specific basin environments and strictly facies-bound. Because of similarities in the shape, mineral content, geochemical composition a.s.o., these mineralizations can be combined as a characteristic lead-zinc-district with Arzberg as the typical deposit. The characteristics of this mineralization in general and of the former Arzberg mine in particular are discussed in detail. Due to alpidic (cretaceous) overprinting, the structures of the sedimentary/exhalative mineralization of paleozoic age is complex causing a multistage mineral paragenesis.
