Hydrogeological assessment of risk of the Petzen area (Karawanken, Carinthia/Slovenia)
by Walter Poltnig, Elmar Strobl & Mihael Brenčič
Abstract: For the definition of the Petzen karstic aquifer, which is situated as well in Slovenia as in Austria, comprehensive geological and hydrogeological investigations were done in 2002 and 2003. Additionally the results of a tracing experiment, which was carried out in the early 80th were evaluated und reinterpreted. Because of the actual land use and of the possibility for a future use for tourism there is a risk for the karstic aquifer und the springs used for drinking water. The risk results out of the interaction between the karstic phenomena, which were related to tectonic structures, and the storage and flow conditions in the underground. For protection of the drinking water protection zones were estimated. These are now the basis for bilateral adjustments between Slovenia and Austria for the realisation of the endeavours for groundwater protection.
