The Clay Pit Mataschen (Kapfenstein, Eastern Styria) - Meeting place of Museum, School, Economy and University
by Ingomar Fritz
Abstract: Since 1998 the Landesmuseum Joanneum organized four projects with support of about 1.700 pupils in the clay pit Mataschen (Kapfenstein, Austria). This clay pit is extracted since 1985 by Lias Österreich GmbH (formerly Österreichische Leca GmbH) and shows sediments of the Lower Pannonian (Upper Miocene) in a large section with about 30 m thickness. We make pupils familiar with geology and palaeontological methods in form of a modern kind of teaching. Besides collecting fossils it is our intention to make public aware of connections between geological development, raw material and environment in our country.
Key Words: Fossils; Clay pit; Museum and school-project.
