Pond Turtles (Clemmydopsis turnauensis (MEYER, 1847); Bataguridae) from the Clay Pit Mataschen in the Styrian Basin (Pannonia)

by Martin Gross

Abstract: From Lower Pannonian sediments (Upper Miocene) of the clay pit Mataschen in the Eastern Styrian Neogenebasin further specimens of the pond turtle Clemmydopsis are described. Variability of the first three centrals, which reach the marginals typically of the genus, confirm the synonymy of Clemmydopsis steinheimensis (Staesche, 1931) and Clemmydopsis turnauensis (Meyer, 1847). The taphonomic record proves an autochthonous occurrence.

Key Words: Fossil Pond Turtles; Bataguridae; Clemmydopsis turnauensis; Taxonomy; Lower Pannonian; Styrian Basin/Austria.
