Beavers and a Dwarf Hamster from Mataschen (Lower Pannonian, Styrian Basin)

by Gudrun Daxner-Höck

Abstract: This contribution describes mammals from the locality Mataschen in Styria, i.e. the beavers Chalicomys jaegeri Kaup, 1832 and Trogontherium (Euroxenomys) minutum (von Meyer, 1838) and the hamster Megacricetodon minutus Daxner, 1967. The beavers indicate wetland environments in the vicinity of a lake or a river. Based on the mollusc fauna, Mataschen was determined to be of Early Pannonian age (“zone B” sensu Papp 1951). This correlation is supported by M. minutus, known to range from MN7/8 to MN9.
