Murrhardtia staeschei n. gen. n. sp. - eine neue Schildkröte aus der Oberen Trias von Süddeutschland

by Hans-Volker Karl & Gottfried Tichy

Abstract: A new genus and species of a turtle, Murrhardtia staeschei, from the Upper Jurassic of Württemberg in Southern Germany is described. It is most likely the first representative of the Australochelyidae in the Palearctic Realm. This genus is clearly distinguished from the praepleurodiran Proterochersis and the Proganochelys, which are supposed to be pleurodiran. Both the Proterochersis and the Proganochelys are of the same stratigraphy age and are reported from the area around Stuttgart as the Murrhardtia has been considered by the authors Broin (1984), Gaffney (1990) and Mlynarski (1976) to belong to one of the two genera mentioned.

Key words: Murrhardtia staeschei n. gen. n. spec., Australochelyidae, Upper Triassic, Wurttemberg, South Germany.
