by Gerhard Withalm

Summary: In 1983 the skeleton of a brown-bear was discovered by some members of the “Cambridge University Caving Club while participating in an expedition to some caves in NW-Styria (Austria). The skeleton of this young male bear was situated at the basis of the first pitch of the Wolfhöhle (Kat.-Nr.: 1623/145), which has a height of about 20 m, in a room called Wolf chamber. This skeleton is described herein and special attention is given to the obvious pathologies like fractures of the left shoulder blade, radius, femur and the ribs 1 - 4. The attempt of a reconstruction of this fatal incident is made. The animal’s individual age of five to six years was determined by the means of newly described methode by Debeljak, I. (1996) in accordance to older methods referred to in Marks, S.A. & Erickson, A.W. (1966).
