Coin Cabinet

The Joanneum’s document of incorporation in 1811 specified that “inland coins of all types of metal” should be collected. The collection started with a donation from Archduke Johann has grown over the centuries, and now includes around 70,000 items. It is the second largest public numismatic collection in Austria. The phenomenon of coinage is presented not just as the story of money. The socio-political, aesthetic, iconographical and cultural aspects of coins are also explored and brought to life in the Coin Cabinet.

From December 1st till March 31st the Coin Cabinet is closed. Please vistit us from 1st April, Wen–Sun.: 10am–5pm.
