Along with the founding of the Joanneum, Archduke Johann also put in hand the establishment of botanical gardens. As the Joanneum Garden, it was very popular with the locals. When the Botanical Institute was set up at the Karl Franzens University, the Institute’s Botanical Gardens were laid out in Schubertstrasse, and in 1889 the plants from the Joanneum Garden were also moved there. The exhibition is a wide-ranging investigation of this chapter of Graz’s botanical history, and is complemented by an attractive publication.
